Decor, Ambience, Expectations, and Identity – by Gary Smolker

I want to have “a ha” enlightening moments, pleasurable moments.

Style and Layout of Interior Furnishing

It is my position that every room we enter is a stage setting.

The style, the layout, the wall coverings, paintings, sculpture, flowers on the table – if any –  the flooring, the furniture and the furnishings, each send a direct message to us when we enter a room.

In a restaurant, the message sent is multifaceted.  The message is –

  • a message telling us what to expect – what kind of menu to expect, what kind of selection of food to expect, what to expect of the quality (of the food, the taste of the food and creativity of the food and beverage creations we consume, if any) of what we will be eating in that restaurant and the what to expect of the beverages severed – available for us we drink,
  • a message telling us who the owner-operator of the restaurant is,
  • a message telling us who the owner-operator wants us to believe he/she is,
  • a message telling us how the wait staff will behave, and
  • a message telling us how we are to behave.

On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, my good friend Jon Warner took me to LAQHAUS, located at 11671 Victory Blvd., L.A., CA 91606.

LAQHAUS is a restaurant I had never heard of.

LAQHAUS

LAQHAUS is a one room restaurant located in that part of Los Angeles known as North Hollywood.

The minute I walked into LAQHAUS, I was blown away by the what I saw on the walls.

Below are some photographs I took of what I saw on the walls.

See photographs of what I saw painted on one of the walls, below.

The caption/statement accompanying the painting/portrait of Marilyn Monroe states:

“Imperfection is Beauty

madness is Genius

and it is better to be absolutely Ridiculous than absolutely Boring”

– Marilyn Monroe

The minute I read that comment, I knew the menu in that restaurant would be exciting, and that whatever dishes were served to me would be exciting.

I immediately knew I was going to enjoy every aspect of my experiences in that restaurant.

There were more painted quotes next to portraits of famous movie stars painted on one of the walls.

See below:

The statement accompanying the portrait of Marlon Brando/”The Godfather” states:

“CONFIDENCE IS SILENT.

INSECURITIES ARE LOUD.”

I love, that statement, and I completely agree with that statement.

I also love the statement next to the portrait of Robert Di Nero.

After looking at those pictures painted on one of the walls, I knew I was going to love the place.

I was not disappointed.

The Food

The food in LAQHAUS was a joy to eat.

For my main course, I had a typical North Hollywood California version of a hamburger with fries.

I had lemonade to drink.

The fries come with a selection of dipping sauces.

INGREDIENTS: This hamburger sandwich consisted of a Beef Patty (beef comes from a grass fed cow), Tillinook (spelling?) Cheddar Cheese, Bacon, Grilled Onion, Chipotle, Aioli, Tomatoes, Arugula, on a brioche bun.

For dessert I had an Oreo Sushi Roll.

The above photo of the Oreo Sushi I had for dessert at LAQHAUS was posted on Instagram @garyspassion on February 20, 2018, with the following text:

Do you like Oreos?  Do you like Sushi?

Imagine eating an Oreo crust surrounding rich creamy vanilla bean ice cream drizzled with caramel.

INGREDIENTS: Oreo/Sushi Roll, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Coconuts, Caramel.

Korean B.B.Q. At One of my Favorite Korean Restaurants

Below is a photograph of the lunch (a Koren BBQ Short Ribs box-lunch) which I ate today (March 5, 2018).

The above photo is posted on Instagram @garyspassion on Monday, March 5, 2018 (today).

My box lunch consisted of BBQ Short Ribs, Fried Rice, Fried Beef Filled Dumpling, Fried Chicken, Seaweed Salad, Ginger, Mixed Green Salad.

The name of the Korean Restaurant and its address are provided in my post on Instagram @garyspassion.

Corn Beef on Rye at One of My Favorite Jewish Deli Restaurants

Below is a photo of the corn beef on rye sandwich I had for lunch two days ago (on Saturday, March 3, 2018).

You don’t have to be a connoisseur to be able to  SMELL really good corn beef before you taste it.

The corn beef on the rye bread in the photo above smelled so delicious, I was beside myself with joyful anticipation of how wonderful that corn beef would taste – before that corn beef sandwich touched any of the taste buds on my tongue.

You may can read my description of all my senses that were triggered when I saw that sandwich, when I smelled that sandwich and when I tasted it.

See my post on March 3, 2018 on Instagram @garyspassion.

In my post I provide the name and address of the delicatessen where I ate that sandwich and describe the entire eating experience I enjoyed in that deli.

Decor, Ambience, Expectations and Identity

Each experience – from the atmosphere in the restaurant, to the way you are treated by the wait staff, to the way the food is presented, the way the food looks, the way the food smells, the way the food tastes –  which you experience in a restaurant creates that restaurant’s identity.

Conclusion

Depending on conditions and circumstances the delivery of a message is 7% verbal, 38% vocal, and 58% nonverbal.

We live in a society of ambience makers and elegant people.

By looking sharp and acting sharp you fashion a sense of pride, positivity, and self-worth that can transcend circumstances as well as social perceptions.

How you dress and what you do, including where you go out to eat, expresses your individualism and your relationship to your own community and to mainstream culture.

You can fashion dignity and self-worth over and above your circmstances by looking good and being “cool.”

Experiences are the new brag.

Seek great experiences.

Be impressive: Share great experiences with others.

Bon Appetite.

Red, White and Green Dinner Plate – by Gary Smolker

Red White and Green are the colors of the Italian flag.

Below are photographs of the Red White and Green Dinner Plate.

In the foreground of one photo you are looking at a dab of red Marsala Sauce and a dab of Green Pesto placed on a slice of White Mozzarella Cheese, in the background you are looking at Farro covered with green pesto and miscellaneous slices of mozzarella cheese and various sliced/cut tiny slices of tomato.

Also, I photographed the bag the Farro came in.

Farro is an ancient grain of the Mediterranean.

Farro was a mainstay in ancient Rome.

Two responsive descriptions I received after sharing the above photographs:

  1. This dish is light digestible and super delicious.
  2. So delicious love the ingredients.  I did not know about Farro before.  I’m going to going to forward this onto my daughters Laure and Morgan who love good food like this and enjoy cooking and preparing the this type of nutritious yummy food like you’ve thoughtfully shared. Thanks. Sounds so yummy.

Food is more than pure art.

Food touches all the senses.

The Italians have a saying that applies to preparing and eating food, “Mettere i puntini sulle i.”

When translated means, “It is important to put all the dots on all the “i”s.

Refinement – by Gary Smolker

THE CONTEMPLATION OF BEAUTY ENHANCES THE SOUL

There is nothing wrong with admiration.

Every meal you eat should be delicious.

Each bite should be so delicious it makes you to stop to savor the taste of what you are chewing.

Eat slowly, very slowly, chew each bite many times before swallowing.

Savor what you are about to read and see what is presented to you solely for your enjoyment, below.

Overview

Knowing brings you knowledge.

Knowledge makes you savor life, makes you savor every moment.

Knowledge is like a diamond.

When it is raw it is beautiful.

When it is cut it is magnificent.

When a diamond is cut it brings in the light.

Refinement is the end result of a quest for knowledge.

Refinement Is About Completion

Below is a description of a complete meal.

A Refined Meal

Thursday night (October 19, 2017) I ate a complete meal.

My complete meal consisted of:

  1. First dish: Soup – velvet zucchini soup.
  2. Second dish: Entree –  lamb, stuffed zucchini, salad
  3. Third dish: Desert – crepes stuffed with honey and walnuts Serbian style and topped with ice cream.

Below are photographs I took while that meal was being prepared.

Velvet Zucchini Soup

Velvet zucchini soup is a soup with no lumps; the zucchini has been pureed.

Below is a photograph of the pureed zucchini (with other ingredients in the pot it was cooked in) which I ate as the first course of my dinner last night.

Below is a photograph of the velvet zucchini soup in a soup bowl after parmesan cheese and pepper added to the zucchini puree shown in the first photograph, the photograph above.

The first course of my dinner last night (the soup pictured above) was absolutely delicious.

Lamb

Below is a sequence of photographs I took as the lamb (I ate for dinner last night) was being prepared.

The lamb was marinated for 12 hours prior to being put in a skillet.

The lamb was sautéd in its own juice, with no oil added.

Stuffed Zucchini

Below is a photo of the stuffed zucchini (which was baked in tin foil in the oven in my kitchen) just before it was completely taken out of the tin foil in which it had been baked.

The stuffed zucchini was crunchy tasty and yummy.

Salad

Below is a photograph of the salad, I ate last night, on the plate it was put on before the zucchini and lamb chop was placed on the same plate.

This mixed Italian salad has tomatoes, radicchio, crescenza, spinach and arugula.

The Second Course

Below is a photograph of the second course, the entree.

Each component (the lamb, the stuffed zucchini and the salad) of this entree was made from scratch with love.

Dessert

My dessert consisted of a crepe stuffed with honey and walnuts Serbian style.

I put several scoops of McConnell’s Peppermint Stick Ice cream on top of my crepe.

My chef put several scoops of Alden’s Organic Vanilla Bean ice cream on top of her crepe.

Advice

Eat food from all over the world prepared from scratch with love.

Be romantic.

Love life.

Love yourself.

Be refined.

Refinement is elegance.

Be elegant.

Live elegantly.

Dessert – by Gary Smolker

Eat Well, Live Well

Through a series of random events I now have an Italian Chef creating delicious meals for me, from scratch, in my kitchen, in my apartment.

The photograph above is a photograph of the entree she prepared for my lunch today.

She prepared that entree while I was working at home.

While the shrimp in that entree were cooking on a skillet on the stove in my kitchen, my workspace was filled with the aroma of breaded shrimp cooking in cognac with garlic, parsley and a pinch of salt.

She also prepared a delicious dessert.

YUM.

Yummy things are not created “just like that.”

It takes time to create yummy things.

My chef created the lunch pictured above in 15 to 20 minutes, more or less.

Not all great meals are created/prepared that quickly.

Last night my chef created a dinner for me that she took six hours to prepare.

Best – by Gary Smolker

Dinner Party

I went to a dinner party in Beverly Hills Friday night, July 28, 2017.

Seven of us sat around a table in the kitchen, eating dinner and talking to each other.

Dinner was Buffet style – serve yourself.

Shiny Shoes

The hostess wore the shiny shoes shown above.

Painted Ceiling

While going from the driveway to the front door one passes under a painted alcove.

See photos above.

Guests

One of the husband-host’s and wife-hostess’ daughters and the daughter’s husband were guests.

Myself and two other people who are not members of the host and hostess’ family were also guests.

Technology

During a discussion about how the use smart phones to instantly exchange information has changed everybody’s life one of the guests, Kevin, who is an Internationally Famous South Korean florist, told of about a recent experience Kevin had.

While in Manhattan (which is on the East Coast of the United States),  Kevin was invited by the head/chief chef at “Per Se” to come into the kitchen.

Kevin told us about his experience in the kitchen at Per Se.

  • The kitchen at Per Se is immaculately clean, orderly, and organized.
  • All the people working in the kitchen are also immaculately clean, orderly and organized.
  • The work flow is totally organized.
  • A screen on a wall in the Per Se kitchen in Manhattan in real time shows what is going on in the kitchen at the French Laundry.
  • The French Laundry is located on the other side of the United States, on West Coast in Napa Valley.
  • Both Per Se and The French Kitchen restaurants are owned/operated by 5 Michelin Star winner Chef Tom Keller.
  • Kevin was told the kitchen in the French Laundry (located on the West Coast) has a screen which has a continuous feed showing what is going on in the Per Se kitchen in Manhattan.

The Palate and Its Pleasures

Various dishes (pictured above) were set out on a counter in the kitchen.

Each guest served themselves, buffet style.

It was a delicious meal.

Persian Culture

The host and hostess come from a culture where it is not unusual for an entire day to be spent preparing one dish that will be served at dinner.

Dessert

After everyone finished eating their dinner, dessert was served by placing different dishes on the kitchen table.

Each guest served themselves — buffet style — whatever they wanted to eat for dessert.

The Best

The best is achieved by attention to detail.

The dinner described above is a Persian style “home cooked meal.”

The meal I enjoyed for dinner Friday night was cooked with love, craftsmanship, skill and quality control by the hostess.

Her husband is a very lucky man.

It is am grateful to be his friend and her friend and to be their frequent dinner guest.

Luxury

Mere luxury quickly becomes boring.

The First Kiss – by Gary Smolker

I Ate It

I went to a small dinner party last night.

The host and hostess had one of their daughters and their daughter’s husband and three other guests over for dinner.

Dinner began at 8:00 p.m.

Persian Dinner Party

It is not unusual for Persians to spend an entire day preparing dishes they will serve for dinner.

Last night was that kind of meal.

It was an absolutely fabulous “home cooked” meal.

The seven of us spent the entire evening seated around a table in the kitchen: talking, serving ourselves food and drink, and eating.

The cake served for dessert (pictured above) was beyond being a masterpiece.

Dessert

The display of items set out on their kitchen table for dessert …  is a picture to write home about.

See photographs below.

When I sent the above set of photos (via email) to a friend of mine in Sicily, she replied:

“Don’t forget the cake Caprese…with ciocolate and almonds” and sent a picture of the cake Caprese which she and her husband had served me and my daughter Leah when Leah and I were guests last month, in their 300 year old farmhouse (converted to a bnb), in Ragusa Sicily. inviato da iPhone

The First Kiss

With all of the above on my mind and day dreaming, while waiting to be seated for breakfast this morning at a local cafe, I asked the hostess if she remembered her first kiss. She replied, “Yes.”

“She was thirteen.  He was seventeen.

“They were on a cruise in Mexico.

“She could hear the waves crashing…

“It was awesome.

“She has never forgotten that kiss, or the name of the boy who kissed her.

“Nor has she forgotten she was a little drunk after having drunk several beers.”

I also had a first kiss I will never forget.  Hasn’t everyone?

I was living in Berkeley, California, attending the University of California at Berkeley.

We were on a camping trip on a beach on the Pacific Coast, 20 or 30 miles North of San Francisco, in the City of Inverness.

Her date, and my date, and everyone else on the camping trip except the two of us, had fallen asleep.

We were still awake, the campfire was still burning, stars were still blazing in the sky.

We stayed up all night talking to each other, as the campfire went out.

We went back to our dates, while they were still asleep, at the break of dawn.

I suspect, I didn’t kiss her.

But, I will never forget that night, that experience, or her name.

Lunch at Fina Estampa – by Gary Smolker

Dessert

During lunch today (April 26,2107), at the Fina Estampa Restaurant in Chatsworth, California, the owner of the restaurant (Kathy Schultz) came to my table and asked me how my daughter Leah and I were enjoying our lunch.

I replied:

“I am so happy that I hope you have a jail cell you can lock me up in until I settle down enough to go outside.”

To this Kathy replied:

“You must try our desserts.”

At the end of our meal, Kathy brought  two desserts (pictured above) to our table: a Leche Asada and Hellado de Lucuma.

When I told Kathy we were too full to eat any dessert, Kathy packed up the desserts and told me to take them home immediately to put them in my refrigerator before the ice cream melted and the Leche Asada (which has egg in it) spoiled.

I did as I was instructed.

That is why I did not go back to my office to work this afternoon.

Picante de Mariscos

For lunch, Leah had Picante de Mariscos.

See photo above of Leah’s lunch.

Picante de Mariscos is a seafood stew simmered in red wine with onions, tomatoes served over boiled potatoes.

The Picante de Mariscos  served at Fina Estampa is a world-class dish.

Peruvian Cuisine

Fina Estampa serves Peruvian cuisine.

Peruvian cuisine is rich in ingredients, influences and nuances.

Its influences are varied and historical –

There are 84 different ecological zones in Peru, each with its own species of plants and animals.

Ancient Peruvians

  • cultivated potatoes and corn in the Andes;
  • pumpkins and Lima beans on the coast;
  • they discovered and used aromatic herbs and Chile peppers as well as fruits of the Amazon region;
  • they also ate fish and mollusks and Llama meat and poultry.

The Spaniards who conquered Peru followed by the Viceroyalty brought with them

  • rice, onions, citrus fruits, wheat, vineyards, olives, pigs, cows and hens;
  • Arab-Moorish  and African touches introduced by workers who arrived to toil on ranches and farms.

Chinese “”coolies” arrived in Peru as migrant workers in the nineteenth century bringing their customs and recipes with them.  They also introduced techniques such as sautéing over a high flame, splashing soy sauce into beef stir-fries, and the tradition of eating white rice.

Japanese immigrants arriving at the end of the nineteenth century, introduced the Japanese love of seafood, subtley of flavoea, and care in haddling ingredients.

Another important influence on Peruvian cuisine is Italian immigrants.

Peruvian cuisine has many influences, including the fusion of influences from distant foreign lands, unique exquisite dishes in each region of Peru based on local customs traditions, ingredients and recipes passed from generation to generation.

By the way, Peru is the gastronomical capital of South America and Lima is the culinary capital of Latin America – a city that journalists, chefs, and visitors from all over the world travel to in search of new dishes and chic places to dine.

In Lima, food is religion.

Cooking professionally has become something to aspire to, and about 80,000 young people are currently studying to be chefs, in schools scattered across Lima.

Travel

During lunch Leah and I discussed why we like to travel.

Leah and travel together because we like to see beauty, we like to see history, and we like to eat some of the best food in the world.

For lunch today, I had Sopa Wantan.

Sopa Wantan is a Peruvian version of Chinese Won Ton soup.

See photo below of the Sopa Wantan that I ate for lunch today.

Next

Leah and I believe that the benefits to us of traveling are

  • traveling allows us to see how beautiful the world is; and
  • traveling enables us to feel more strongly connected to the beauty of the world.

Next, Leah and I will be going to Sicily together.

We will arrive in Sicily on May 21 and return back to California on June 4, 2017

Below is a photograph of an Itinerary for our upcoming trip to Sicily Leah which jotted down while we were eating lunch today.

Leah and I discussed that Itinerary in great detail while we were eating lunch.

By the way,

  • Sicily has better preserved and more spectacular Greek ruins then Greece.
  • The Norman Palace in Palermo (Palazzo Reale) with the Palatine Chapel is fantastic – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The island of Ortygia is an ancient district of Siracusa (Syracuse). In the the city’s Jewish quarter until 1493 (in the Giudecca) is the oldest Mikvah known to survive in Europe.
  • Judaism was present in Sicily way before the arrival of Christianity on Sicilian shores.
  • It is thought that while in Syracuse (AD (CE) 59, Paul of Tarsus preached to Jews as well as to Greeks.
  • The Mikvah in Siracusa dates from the Byzantine period following the fall of the “western” Roman empire to invading forces (in Italy mostly Vandals and Visigoths) in the fifth century.

Leah and I will be flying out of LAX (departing from Los Angeles) on May 20, 2017.

It will be a long flight.

We will not land in Sicily until May 21, 2017.

Real Beauty – by Gary Smolker

Sunday Morning, March 12, 2017

Sunday morning I went to Noah’s Bagel (on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks, California)  to get a cup of coffee.

After getting my cup of coffee I sat at a big table.

Soon after I sat down a little girl and her young brother sat down at the same table with their grandmother.

The little girl ran away, disappeared for a moment.

Then she came back a few minutes later with a bottle of chocolate milk for herself and a bottle of chocolate milk for her little brother.

She was so cute I couldn’t resist taking a picture of her.  See picture below.

I recommend Noah’s Bagel on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks as a delightful place to meet families with children.

What Does It Mean To Be Beautiful?

The little girl in the photo above is self-confident and comfortable with herself.

I think that is what real beauty is.

Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2017

Sunday afternoon I went to Fina Estampa (on Winnetka Avenue in Chatsworth, California) to get a bowl of soup.

The soup smelled so good and looked so delicious I took a picture of it and asked a waitress to take a picture of me eating it.  See collage below.

The name of the soup is Parihuela.

Parihuela consists of an array of seafood simmered in a flavorful soup including fish, shrimp, squid, & crab legs.

Smell the cilantro.

I recommend Fina Estampa as a perfect place to sample a variety of authentic Peruvian cuisine.

Not only is the food good, the service staff is friendly, helpful and pleasantly outgoing.

Beauty Everywhere

I am surrounded by beauty everywhere I go.

I discovered Fina Estampa on Wednesday (March 8, 2017) when I met my daughter Leah at a restaurant next door to Fina Estampa.

The next day (Thursday, March 9, 2017), I enjoyed eating and drinking the most wonderful milkshake I have ever eaten or seen.

When I stopped at Le Mervetty (on Cannon Drive in Beverly Hills, California) to meet my lady friend Alanna,  Alanna insisted that I try an Oreo Milkshake.

The master-pastry-chef-owner insisted that it be her treat.

See photos below.

First photo is a collage of three photos showing the milkshake before I ate it, me eating the meringue that came with the milkshake, and showing the frosted glass the milkshake came in after I finished eating and drinking the milkshake.

That is chocolate you see on the edge of the frosted mug the milkshake is served in.

When you are done eating/drinking the milkshake you can eat the chocolate that remains on the outside of the frosted mug is is served in.

Below is a close-up photo of the milkshake.

This milkshake is called an Oreo milkshake.

You are looking at Oreo cookies on the outside of the mug and Oreo crumbles on top of the whipped cream.

“Inside” the milkshake mug is ice cream and chocolate covered coffee beans.

I recommend Le Mervetty as a place to give your sweet tooth the perfect gastronomical treat.

Everything at Le Mervetty is high quality but not stuffy.

The staff is not stuffy.  You can practice your French with them, if you care to do so.

The confections at Le Mervetty are lavish and creative.

Thank Heavens for Little Girls

Life is about being comfortable in your own skin.

Little girls remind me of that.

Thank heavens for little girls.

Every girl, woman and lady in my life is beautiful.

Thank heavens for that blessing.

Beautiful People Glow. They Emote Beauty – by Gary Smolker

November 26, 2016

This morning I read a beautiful note (email) my friend Jason Fane sent to my youngest daughter Leah Smolker last night.

Jason gave Leah recommendations on what to see in Italy.

See copy of Jason’s email below.

Jason’s Email to Leah

Leah,

Excellent photos.  What I liked about Florence was the excellent food, the green and white church and you need to see the Michaelangelo statue of David.  Apparently, Michaelangelo didn’t know about Jews and the statue was not circumcised.

You should visit the Vatican to find out what the Catholic clergy mean  by “Living in poverty.”  See the Pantheon in Rome and try opening and closing the huge doors a little.
Watch our for Africans who might want to rape you.  If you can get a Taser, it provides an excellent deterrent.

Subject: New Blog

This is a new blog, a personal piece. Dad may think it is a sale pitch and marketing device for travel and I think its an attempt to organize my thoughts and future plans. Here it is:

Jason and Leah Are Beautiful People

Jason and Leah are both beautiful people.

They are both lovely people.

They are always their real selves.

Beautiful Is What You Are Made Of

Beautiful is not how you look on the outside.

Beautiful is what you are made of.

Beautiful people spend their time discovering what beauty is.

They the share the beauty they have discovered with other people.

A Beautiful Person is a person who soaks up the beauty of the world, makes that beauty his or hers and then shares that beauty with other people.

That is what Jason and Leah do.

Jason and Leah

Jason and Leah fill themselves up with beauty; they take it in; they make it theirs; then, they share it with other people.

They glow.

When you are with them they make you feel warm and safe and curious.

Love and the Pursuit of Happiness

Travel is good.  Fashion is good.  Food is good.  Ideas are good.  I share what I know about those topic with other people.

I blog about those topics.

The Pursuit of Happiness

We are all pursuing happiness above all else.

But we are not going to find lasting happiness in travel, fashion, food or ideas.

We are going to find lasting happiness in love and intimacy more than anything else.

The trick to being happy is being the “real you”; being the real you on both the receiving and giving ends in a relationship with someone else.

Look at the happy and joyful the correspondence between Jason and Leah.

Jason and Leah are being 100% real with each other.

They are bonding with each other.

By the way, I know they never stop bonding with each other.

Compare the happiness they are sharing with each other by sharing the beauty of the world with each other and their true feelings with each other with the miserable lives you know many people are living.

Some married people are living miserably.

Some (In Fact Many) Married Women Are Nuns

At a recent dinner party a married woman told me she is a nun: “None in the morning, none in the afternoon, none at night.”

Tom Cat Transactional Sex

At the same dinner, a “single wealthy older man” told me he believes women will do anything [including having sex with him] for financial security, or even for a “free meal.”

Many men and women have told me that is their view of reality, of the way of the real world.

They have reached a point in their lives where it is their reality to see sex as a transaction.

Scratching Post Sex

Some married men, some married women, some single men and some single women think of sex in terms of satisfying a physical need without any emotional content.

Those people are not beautiful.

They are incapable of having a tender loving emotional relationship with one another.

In “Love Warrior” Glennon Doyle Melton reports:

One hot morning in the summer after tenth grade, my best friend and I go to the local pet store to visit the animals.  My friend is considering having sex with her boyfriend and she asks me to tell her what it’s like.  I watch the kittens play in their cage and notice one pouncing on a nearby scratching pad.  I point to that kitten and say, ‘Sex is like that.  I’m the scratching past and Joe pounces on me when he gets the urge.  My body’s a toy he likes to play with, but he’s not all that interested in me.  It’s like, he’s touching me – but he’s not really touching me.  Sex isn’t really personal.  It’s just that I happen to be his girlfriend so my body is his to play with.  It feels childish to me.  Like cats pouncing on scratching posts.  But I learned this trick: I just leave my body there to get over with and I slip out and think about other things.  I plan outfits and stuff.  Sex is something I have, really, it just happens to my body while I’m up here, waiting for it to be over.  But, I don’t think Joe knows.  Or cares.’

Believe it or not, many women experience sex they way Glennon describes sex in the above paragraph.

Furthermore, I have heard of married women who have not had sex with their husbands for ten years or more.

People Are Made for Intimacy

People are made for intimacy.

They find someone they are drawn to, someone they want to have a relationship with.

Their relationships will not work when if they are unable to bring their whole real self to each other.

Look at how Jason and Leah bring their whole real selves to each other in their email exchange about Italy.

To Be Loved You Have to Be Known

You can only be in love with someone else when you are fully present.

Another person can only be in love with you when you and the other person are both fully present.

Love is a sacred place created when two people decide it’s safe to be their real selves, a place to be fully human and fully known.

Intimacy

Building trust and intimacy takes time.

Intimacy and trust between two people is a mountain.

You can’t start by leaping to the top.

If you do, you miss the climb; the climb is where you bond.

You’ve got to climb together one step at a time.

 Takeaway

If you want to have long lasting happiness, pair up with someone

  • who loves beauty,
  • seeks beauty, and
  • shares beauty with others.

You will know when you have found a person like that because people like that glow, they radiate beauty, they emote beauty, they share beauty.

When you are around Jason or Leah when they are talking about the beautiful things they have seen in the world or talking about the beautiful things they have seen done, or thought about, you feel warm and safe and literally purr in contentment.
